On average, 40% of traffic deaths during the holidays are tied to alcohol. Those figures are especially troubling given that more than 40 million Americans plan to hit the road in the coming days. Recognizing the increased risks of the season, each year we partner with our courts and agencies to generate 56,367 Sober Days for the Holidays through our SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring® program, providing accountability and monitored sobriety for your highest-risk clients during the toughest time of the year. But sadly, Halloween brings out more than just mini goblins, ghosts, and ghouls. Each year, the holiday sees a sizable increase in the number of DUIs and other alcohol-related incidents. The numbers show that Halloween is one of the deadliest days of the year on the roads: 36% of pedestrian fatalities on Halloween night involve a drunk driver. Children are more than twice as likely to be killed by a car while walking on Halloween night. Learn more about the dangers this Halloween by viewing this informative infographic: Click to Enlarge

President Proclaims December As National Impaired Driving Prevention Month https://scramca.com/president-proclaims-december-national-impaired-driving-prevention-month/ Wed, 07 Dec 2016 00:17:49 +0000 https://scramca.com/?p=3125 As he has every year since 2009, last week President Obama officially named December 2016 as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.[/caption] Impaired driving and related fatalities spike during the holiday season, making this an important time of year to remind drivers what’s at stake when they get behind the wheel. In his proclamation the president specifically called out the impact of drunk driving, noting that “preventable alcohol-related driving fatalities accounted for nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities” in 2015. Despite years of messaging by anti-drunk driving groups and intensive efforts by law enforcement agencies, this percentage has remained largely unchanged in the past decade. Drugged and distracted driving are also growing dangers on the nation’s roads and highways. Stopping impaired driving requires both personal responsibility and action as well as effective public policies. The president stated that as a nation “we must recommit to doing everything we can to prevent driving-related injuries and fatalities,” including: Pledging not to get behind the wheel after drinking, and not to text while driving. Ever. Calling 911 if we suspect a driver is drunk or impaired. Setting a good example for teen drivers by modeling safe driving practices and choices. Providing better treatment options for Americans who struggle with alcohol and substance misuse disorders. Giving law enforcement the resources and tools they need to address impaired driving. What other steps do you think we need to take as citizens and as a country to stop drunk, drugged, and distracted driving? Reposted from sobering-up.com

Data Shows Drinking Issues Spike Nationwide on Super Bowl Sunday https://scramca.com/data-shows-drinking-issues-spike-nationwide-on-super-bowl-sunday/ https://scramca.com/data-shows-drinking-issues-spike-nationwide-on-super-bowl-sunday/#respond Tue, 02 Feb 2016 16:51:05 +0000 https://scramca.com/?p=2945 States with a team in the game historically see biggest increases in drinking violations The most dangerous place to be during Super Bowl 50 isn’t between the Denver Broncos’ star defense and Cam Newton—it’s out on the road. In a report released by Alcohol Monitoring Systems (AMS) about the drinking behavior of over 465,000 DUI offenders who were monitored 24/7 for alcohol consumption, drinking violations for the monitored group jumped an average of 15 percent nationwide on Super Bowl Sunday, compared to usual violation rates on a normal Sunday. The majority of those offenders are considered to be high-risk, repeat drunk drivers who knew they were being monitored and that there would be consequences, including incarceration. Even more shockingly, drinking violations more than quadrupled on average in states and regions with a team in the big game. When the New England Patriots faced the Seattle Seahawks in 2015, violations among offenders in New England were five times higher than the rest of the U.S., and Washington saw a 59 percent increase over an ordinary Sunday. Officials in Colorado may have extra cause for concern: When the Denver Broncos played in Super Bowl XLVIII, drinking violations for monitored offenders in that state jumped an astonishing 191 percent compared to the rest of the country. The findings are part of a troubling trend around the nation’s favorite pastime, according to AMS vice president Lou Sugo. “Alcohol and the Super Bowl go hand-in-hand, and when there’s drinking some people make bad decisions, especially about driving,” says Sugo. “The individuals we monitor are being tested every 30 minutes, and they know they’re going to be caught. You can imagine the rate of drinking for those who aren’t being monitored.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 43 percent of all traffic fatalities on Super Bowl Sunday in 2012 were caused by drunk driving, compared to an average of 31 percent during the rest of the year. NHTSA’s Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk campaign encourages people to make plans ahead of time that will prevent them from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking.
